Effort, Dedication, Devotion and Glory. This is Sporting

Sporting Lisbon green white hoops

Classic and historical Sporting Lisbon shirts, from the 1990s

This page shows the evolution of football jerseys from Sporting Lisbon from the 1990s. We show the home (hooped), Stromp (split green/white), away, and goalkeeper shirts, match worn (worn by players in a game, or prepared for a player who stayed in the bench or was not even called, and are very different from the jerseys bought by the fans), as well as replica kits.

From the 1995/1996 season on, each player received his own number, that he kept for the entire season. Before, each game started with the players wearing jerseys number one to eleven.

This decade was hard on the Sporting fans. The Club arrived to 1999 with only one Cup and one Supercup won, and 17 years without the major Portuguese title: the Championship. With effort, dedication and devotion, we reached glory: this is Sporting! We ended the decade, and started the 21st Century as national champions.

Sporting Lisbon jerseys of the 1990/1991 season: Umbro

The decade started with another change of shirt supplier, to the English Umbro, for two years only. This company was able to produce beautiful sober jerseys, even if it used, as was usual at the time, fabrics with in-built patterns. The kits worn by the Sporting Lisbon football players had a green colour in line with the Sporting Lisbon standard, while some of the replica kits (albeit not all) had a "bottle green" with a red component too strong for Sporting.

The Sporting Clube de Portugal away jersey was a classic white, with green details. It was fortunately a lot less bold than other Umbro kits of the early nineties.

The sponsor was Bonança in the two Umbro years. It was written in blue, while previous sponsorhip publicity on the jerseys had been in black, which does not disagree with the green white Sporting colors.

Sporting Lisbon jerseys in 1991/1992

In the second and last year that Umbro supplied the Sporting Lisbon kit, the shirts as such remained unchanged. In the jerseys worn in the pitch by the Sporting soccer team, the style of the lettering of the numbers was different in most of the cases, which helps in identifying the season. In official matches, only green/white hooped shirts were worn by the football senior side. White away jerseys equal to those of 1990/91 were worn in one single pre-season friendly.

The 1992/1993 Sporting Clube de Portugal official jersey: Adidas

After Umbro came Adidas. In its first years as supplier of the Sporting Lisbon jersey, Adidas made some home spectacular home kits. Afterwards, perhaps only Reebok in the end of the nineties, and with certainty with the Centennial year Sporting Lisbon jersey, did Sporting Clube de Portugal wear such well achieved kits.

The away jersey, mainly in green, was less exciting. The split green/white Stromp jersey was worn in one single match, the presentation game against PSV Eindhoven, in memory of Francisco Stromp, an athlete and symbol of the early years of Sporting.

The sponsor was Aguas do Caramulo and was very visible, particularly in the away jerseys, because it required a white background for contrast. This started a series of sponsorships with status and dignitas that did not match the Club's.

Adidas continued to be the supplier of the Sporting jerseys. The new sponsor FAXE beer managed to have a blue background still larger and uglier than the infamous tmn blue rectangle that led to many complaints from the Sporting Lisbon supporters in 2011.

The home kit remained equal to the previous year, even in the numbering style of the match worn jerseys. Sporting had two different away kits this year, with exactly the same design but one all white and the other all green.

Once again no silverware was conquered by Sporting Lisbon this season, in spite of having a fantastic team with some of the world's best players, such as Figo.

Sporting Lisbon 1994/1995 jerseys - winner of Cup and Supercup

This was the third year that Adidas made the famous green white hoops for Sporting Lisbon. The jersey as such remained equal to the previous two, i.e. fantastic. The sponsor became the cheese brand Queijo Castelões, perhaps the least consistent with the status of Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Once again there were two different away shirts, completely white and completely green, with a wavy version of the three Adidas stripes.

Sporting conquered the Portuguese football Cup, as well as the corresponding Super-Cup Candido de Oliveira, but the main national titel, the championship, proved once again elusive.

The Sporting Clube de Portugal shirt in 1995/1996

Starting this season on, each player was assigned a given shirt number that he retained throughout the year.

In the fifth year with Adidas, Sporting continued to have beautifully classic shirts, The sponsor changed yet again, this time to the new private television channel SIC, in black, with the ublicity better integrated in the jersey.

The away shirt was similar to that of the previous year, but normally white, not green. Possibly close to the end of the season, completely green jerseys of a different design, were used in matches by the players. These jerseys, similar to those used the following season, replaced the three wavy stripes with the standard Adidas stripes at the end of the sleeves near the wrists.

This was the seventh season in a row without having the green/white split Stromp jersey.

The Sporting Lisbon 1996/1997 jersey

The Adidas home jersey is one of the worst in the history of Sporting, because of the sleeves without hoops.

Besides totally white and totally green away jerseys, the Stromp kit was also used.

The sponsor became the private telecom company Telecel, so remaining for four seasons.

The Sporting Lisbon jerseys in 1997/1998

In this season, the Sporting Club Portugal football kits remained practically equal to those of the previous season. The main difference is that the Portuguese League introduced a patch on the right shoulder of the player issue jerseys, so the Telecel sponsor logo now occupied only the left shoulder.

Sporting Lisbon used three different away jerseys: the Stromp shirt, and then totally white and totally green jerseys.

Sporting Clube de Portugal jerseys in 1998/1999: Reebok

After two terrible years with Adidas, in 1998/99 Sporting Lisbon had again home jerseys that were sobre, with hoops all around including in the sleeves.

At the same time, the away jerseys, that so far had been white or Sporting-green, started to include other colours, such as black and yellow, while the Stromp shirt retained its status as gala kit.

The Telecel sponsorship, once again in black, continued to be reasonably well integrated in the jerseys.

This season marked the 17th year since Sporting Clube de Portugal occupied its rightful place in the national championship - the top.

The Sporting Lisbon jersey in 1999/2000 - National Champion

The season that started in the last year of the 20th Century and ended in the beginning of the 21st Century saw Sporting conquer the most important silverware once again. The kit supplier was Reebok once again, and the sponsor continued to be Telecel.

The home striped jersey and the Stromp jersey were very similar to those of the previous season. The away kit had a diagonal stripe.
